This month's article in Rebecca's Fearbusters: The Newsletter centered around the surprising gratitude I felt while in the midst of food poisoning (to read the entire article, see below post). I, personally, was shocked that I'd automatically go into gratitude mode, especially while retching my guts out. The truth is, though, I think I've never had my sense of gratitude tested that way before, so how would I have known it would be automatic?
What I want to know, is how automatic is it for you? Do you have to work at being grateful while in a challenging (or even super-yucky!) situation? Do you even remember to do it? Would you like it to be automatic? What are your thoughts on the subject? And how do you think you could make it possible for a state of gratitude to be automatic for you, no matter what is going on around you?
Rock on!
Rebecca :-)

Hi Rebecca,
Gratitude is not automatic in challenging situations yet. I'm still struggling with doing my daily acknowledgements and gratitudes. Do you have any advice on how to make doing them easier?
Kayla
Hi Kayla!
You are SO not alone in having trouble doing gratitudes and acknowledgements daily!
The things that have made them easier for me & for my clients have been things like the following:
-- SET ASIDE A CERTAIN TIME OF DAY TO DO THEM when it will be EASY for you to write them. (Morning is good for some, evening for others, some even write them when they're on the subway every morning)--Trying to force yourself to do them when you don't have a specific time set aside to do them can make them hard to do continuously. Make forming the habit EASY for yourself.
--CHOOSE A SPECIFIC PLACE TO WRITE THEM(like a journal) that you LOVE. If you choose a place that you LOVE to write them down, you'll automatically be drawn to it. (I have a pink leather journal from staples that I love the feel of--so picking it up is a pleasure in itself--and the pages are small--perfect for fitting 5 acknowledgement and 5 gratitudes--and it's portable, so it fits easily into my bag, wherever I go). The more you love where you write them, the more likely you are TO write them.
--WORK THEM INTO A HABIT YOU ALREADY HAVE. Some of my clients tack their acks & grats writing onto their morning meditation & prayer time, or Artist's Way "Morning Pages" time (check out www.theartistsway.com/ for more information on The Artit's Way)--for them, they're already in a situation that facilitates writing them, and adding it to the habit they already have makes them much easier to do.
--RE-READ YOUR ACKS & GRATS! In most cases, you'll get energy from reading about the things you're grateful for and the things you're acknowledging yourself for--and that should make writing them each time easier, simply because you'll start to like how it feels!
BOTTOM LINE: Make doing them SO IMPOSSIBLY EASY for yourself that by the time you've done them for a few days, the energy of what you're writing will pull you forward to do more.
If you have any more questions, let me know!
Have a Fearless Day!
Rebecca :-)
